The situation in Japan is still unfolding. Updates at http://twitter.com/6d7770.

There has been a major earthquake in Japan. The shocks hit Tokyo at approximately 14:50. Michael was on the 17th floor in an office building in Aoyama Itchome.
The initial quake lasted about 3 minutes with a 60 second peak, and caused significant lateral building movement. About 25 minutes later, a major aftershock of similar magnitude and duration struck. Since then, there have been a series of aftershocks of diminishing duration. The building continues to sway from side to side with a low frequency. Many people are feeling seasick.
The phone systems have been inoperable since the quake. The subway system has been shut down, and is still not operating as this time (16:50).
No one in our office was injured. Sadly, it appears that there have been several fires in the Tokyo area and a major tsunami in Sendai (to the north).
17:12: Another fairly big aftershock. Building swaying.
17:21: And again
17:32: Another aftershock. It seems they are coming every 10 minutes or so. Here's a list from http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/quake_local_index.html

17:39: It looks like all the above ground trains are stopped as well as the subways. There will be millions of people walking home tonight. The streets are already filling with pedestrians. The setting sun is a startling red. Perhaps a lot of dust in the air?
23:03 Another aftershock. They have been coming all evening. The subways are running again. The crowd is unbelievable.

We suffered a hard disk failure on Sunday 2010-01-31. The cause was a Seagate Momentus drive, which are becoming famous for premature failure. We now recommend avoiding Seagate drives in favour of Western Digital. Services were restored progressively on Monday and Tuesday. No data or emails were lost. Unread instant messages should be resent, and you may need to re-authorize with your buddies.
